To mark the local observance of Earth Day 2022 last month, Scotiabank Bahamas engaged in tree planting exercises at three primary schools across the Bahamas.

Some 50 fruit and shade tree seedlings were planted by the Bank’s executives and students from the three schools – Garvin Tynes Primary School in Carmichael, the Ridgeline Primary School in East and Solider and the Hugh Campbell Primary School in Freeport.

Students were also engaged in brief educational discussions about the environment, facilitated by Scotiabank volunteers and representatives from the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI), who partnered with the Bank to complete the exercise.

“Scotiabank is a proud champion of the environment. We are excited that the students are getting an opportunity to play a role in preserving the environment for their future,” said Chante Hanna, Personal Banking Officer who visited the Garvin Tynes Primary School.

Ezralee Kemp, Academic Affairs Co-ordinator, who addressed the students on behalf of BAMSI, engaged students in an interactive session promoting the importance of preserving the environment to sustain life.

“We are pleased to have partnered with Scotiabank to celebrate Earth Day with the next generation. This tree planting exercise has been tremendous, and I am happy to have been here to interact with the students as we play an important role in caring for our environment,” the BAMSI rep stated.

Allison Wood, principal of the Ridgeland Primary School said, “It is always a pleasure for us to have partnerships such as yours where we want to educate our boys and girls about the importance of saving our Earth.”

Earth Day is an annual event that is observed internationally on April 22 as a day to demonstrate support for environmental protection and to combat as best as possible, the effects of climate change on nature. Since the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 more than 1 billion individuals have been mobilized for action on this day.

The global theme for Earth Day 2022 was ‘Invest in Our Planet’.
