A murder victim's illegal gun possession case formally came to an end yesterday.

Kevin Andrews Jr. was supposed to appear before Magistrate Samuel McKinney for a ruling on whether he had to present a defense to accusations that he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition on December 31, 2020.

Sadly, he was gunned down at a fruit stand in Gamble Heights on April 22. But for his tragic end, McKinney said he would have had a case to answer.

According to the evidence, police were on patrol in Gamble Heights when they received information that led them to a home in the area.

Police met six men on the porch, behaving in a suspicious manner. The officers informed the men that they suspected they were in possession of drugs and firearms and proceeded to search.

The officers found the firearm in a black plastic bag near the men.

As a result, they arrested Andrews, Vincent Newbold Sr., Vincent Newbold Jr., Darren Curtis and Kareem Johnson.

In their police interviews, all of the men claimed that Andrews had placed the gun in the bag.

McKinney acquitted Andrews’ co-defendants after finding there was insufficient evidence to require them to present a defense.

Inspector Timothy Bain prosecuted.
