The Eugene Dupuch Law School commemorated International Women's Day this year with a book presentation by The Honourable Dame Anita M. Allen, DBE.

Dame Allen presented the school with a copy of Pioneering Caribbean Women Jurists, a signature publication by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), in which Dame Anita is featured.

According to the CCJ, “The publication shines a spotlight on the biographies of thirty-four (34) Eminent Caribbean Women Jurists and aims to educate and inspire the upcoming generation of attorneys and legal practitioners.” The book, which was officially launched in October 2021, was edited by CCJ judges, the Hon. Mr. Justice Winston Anderson and the Hon. Madame Justice Maureen Rajnauth-Lee.

“We are grateful to receive this book today, a very fitting occasion as we recognize IWD and Women’s History Month and join with organizations globally in celebrating the achievements of women. Dame Anita has been a mentor and inspiration to many young legal professionals, not only in The Bahamas but in the region and we congratulate her for the inclusion in this outstanding collection of female legal luminaries,” expressed Eugene Dupuch Law School, Principal Tonya Bastian Galanis.

Dame Anita served as a Judge on The Bahamas Supreme Court for fourteen (14) years before her appointment as President of the Court of Appeal in 2010, a position that she held until her retirement in 2017.

An excerpt from the autobiographical account of Dame Anita in the book captures her essence in the following way: “Despite the adversity of her early life, Dame Anita has had a life of distinction, marked by duty and responsibility, and undergirded by love of country. Her achievements are legendary, and the body of work she left will influence the jurisprudence of The Bahamas for some time.”
