As monitoring a country’s carbon footprint becomes more important, World Wetlands Day is also getting more attention.
Mrs. Ann Marie Davis, in her leadership role as the wife of the Prime Minister in the Office of the Spouse, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, the Hon. Vaughn Miller and members of the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) recently planted over 25 young mangroves at Bonefish National Park to mark the occasion.
Present during the activity were CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Director of Corporate Banking Kemar Polius and the bank’s Marketing Manager Nikia Christie.
CIBC FirstCaribbean donated $2,000 to the Bahamas National Trust during the mangrove planting exercise to assist in its continued efforts to manage and preserve the country’s natural resources.
Nikia Christie said the bank is pleased to work in partnership with the Bahamas National Trust.
“Corporate social responsibility is a big focus for our bank. We focus on several pillars such as youth and education, health and wellness and community and environment.
“We thought it fitting that on World Wetlands Day we would support the Bahamas National Trust because we know how important mangroves are to our ecosystem and we want to make sure we are being good corporate citizens- not only taking care of our clients and their financial health, but also taking care of the health of our nation.”
Wife of the Prime Minister, Ann Marie Davis and the Bahamas National Trust’s Executive Director Eric Carey thanked CIBC FirstCaribbean for their donation.
The pair also expressed the importance of wetlands and mangroves to The Bahamas, the significance of World Wetlands Day and why taking part in mangrove restoration is important.
Eric Carey underscored that donations like CIBC FirstCaribbean’s help others to learn more about the valuable wetland spaces protected within Bonefish National Park and other national parks as well as help the BNT to take action to aid in restoration.
“We are deeply appreciative that CIBC FirstCaribbean supports Bahamian national parks and the BNT as we endeavor to protect the natural treasures of The Bahamas,” he said.
Prior to this donation, CIBC FirstCaribbean reaffirmed its commitment to environmental support through the donation of several native trees to the Bahamas Girl Guides Association, which were planted at their campsite, Camp Discovery, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Housing’s Forestry Unit last year.
