No airlines interrupted by industrial action, says aviation director

Besides minor delays, no airlines were affected operationally from the “illegal” sickout by some airport workers under the Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU), Director of Aviation Algernon Cargill told Guardian Business yesterday.

Cargill said specifically that Abaco’s airport will be open and operational tomorrow.

He said that during the industrial action, early morning Bahamasair and Western Air flights were delayed, but all other flights were unaffected.

“Abaco airport was able to reopen by 10 o’clock,” Cargill said.

“Based on that, there would have been no interruptions from Abaco’s end.

“Persons traveling from Abaco to Nassau early morning to catch a flight, the connection there may have been affected, but certainly not in Abaco at all (after 10 a.m.).

“Abaco will be open tomorrow, nothing to worry about.”

The Water and Sewerage Corporation was scheduled to hold a commissioning ceremony on Abaco yesterday, but officials were unable to fly to Abaco as a result of the industrial action, Guardian Business understands.

The disruption to the airport comes three days before a general election and on the day that the Free National Movement planned a drive-in rally in North Abaco.
