As an equestrian show jumper, Maya Tilberg is accustomed to aiming high. Her most recent triumph came not in the show ring but in academics as she soared above a field of outstanding candidates to capture the 2021 All-Bahamas Merit Scholarship. It is the most prestigious national scholarship to be awarded to a single Bahamian candidate.

Tilberg dazzled academically, gaining 10 A’s in the most recent Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) national examinations, graduating as the valedictorian of St. Augustine’s College (SAC) with a 3.99 Grade Point Average (GPA), and being awarded the Mark Twain Scholarship which earned her a spot in the Honors College at the University of Missouri. Currently, Tilberg has declared a Biological Science major with Pre-Med focus.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and executive officers of Equestrian Bahamas and the entire Bahamian equestrian sports community, we offer Maya our congratulations on this spectacular achievement,” said the president of Equestrian Bahamas Cathy Ramsingh-Pierre.

Tilberg is an outstanding equestrian athlete and a fixture on the local competition circuit. She is a three-time Bahamas Junior Jumper Champion who also successfully represented The Bahamas in equestrian team competition internationally.

Tilberg started classes in person this past Monday and is settling in well so far. Her only disappointment was in learning that the University of Missouri does not have an equestrian team. However, she plans to pursue volunteer opportunities at the university veterinary program’s large animal facility.
