Suspect in bathroom escape bid

A SUSPECT pretended he had to use the bathroom in an attempt to escape a local police station, an officer testified yesterday.

Police said Malcolm Rolle attempted to escape lawful custody in December 2020 under the guise that he wanted to use the restroom. They further alleged he resisted violently when thwarted by two officers on duty.
#Rolle denied the allegations when he first appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.
#Yesterday, when Police Constable Kendrick Moss testified during Rolle’s trial, he said he was on duty at the South Central police station’s cell block where four suspects were being held at the time. He said sometime that day, one of the suspects called for an officer and when he went to see what the man wanted, the suspect requested to use the restroom. PC Moss said after he escorted the first male to the bathroom, he asked the remaining three who were detained if they also needed to urinate.
#He said Rolle was the last suspect he escorted to the restroom, and when he did, the accused “gave him eye contact before looking at the cell gate”. According to PC Moss, the cell gate led to the main entrance of the station where people could enter and exit freely.
#He said as he was leading Rolle to the bathroom, the defendant “started to walk closer to the cell gate”. He stated when he asked him where he was going, Rolle pushed him which caused him to lose his footing.
#“While I was off balance he was able to open the cell gate and attempt to run,” PC Moss said.
#“I was able to grab him by his shirt and another officer came to my assistance. When we attempted to place him back in the cell, he resisted violently by kicking and throwing his hands”. The officer said he and his partner were eventually able to subdue Rolle who they then put back in the cell.
#During the proceedings, Rolle was not represented by an attorney.
#When he cross-examined PC Moss, he asked him how long he was thrown off balance when he was allegedly pushed.
#When the officer said “about two seconds”, Rolle suggested it would have been impossible for him to attempt to escape custody in that short space of time.
