In the spirit of community appreciation, Lightbourne Marine has donated a 20kW Kohler standby generator set and automatic transfer switch to The Dunmore School on Harbour Island. The four room school house which serves 34 pupils aged 3-12years has endured much hardship from the frequent and extended power outages, often having to send students home due to the uncomfortable and sometimes unsanitary conditions arising from the lack of power, such as inoperable restrooms.

“The Kohler Power Systems representative for the Bahamas, Lightbourne Marine has built strong business ties to the Harbour Island community over the years,” said Rachel Lightbourne, Generator Sales Manager. “My father, Terrance Lightbourne, spent much of his childhood on the Island and has many fond memories of the place. I learned of The Dunmore School while participating in “The Dunmore Cup” charity fishing tournament a few years back hosted by Rainey and Melissa Cellars in which I caught my first Blue Marlin. I loved that the children at the school designed the tournament shirts each year. The Dunmore Cup has been on hiatus for a couple of years, so we decided to use the funds raised from our own annual “Lightbourne Marine Wahoo Challenge” fishing tournament to supply the school with the generator as power outages continue to plague the island.”

Roger Eldon, Lightbourne Marine Generator Technician who installed the equipment, said, “We make at least two trips a month to Harbour Island so we’ve made a lot of friends we value very highly; good folks who’ve really made us feel at home”. “Lightbourne Marine couldn’t think of a better way to say thanks”, he added.

Both staff and students are elated by the donation. "We are so excited that being without power is now a thing of the past," said Head of School, Tricia Lomas. She added, "The generator is small and quiet and classes can now continue uninterrupted. We are so grateful for the generosity of Lightbourne Marine and this wonderful gift to our school". Parents of the students paid for the propane gas tank and the masonry work that was needed. “Baldwin Carey of Carey’s Electric, and Thompson’s Plumbing also donated their time, labor, and effort to make this possible, so we thank them, too, for their participation,” said Rachel.
