Veteran journalist and ZNS TV 13 news anchor Jerome Sawyer was gun butted and robbed at his home on West Bay Street yesterday morning.

According to police press officer Sergeant Chrislyn Skippings, the incident occurred sometime around 1.30am when Mr Sawyer was returning to his home on Brook Street. The culprit, whom sources claim was lying in wait for the noted journalist approached the 37-year-old broadcaster when he had just arrived at his home and gun butted him as he was about to open the gate to his yard.

Addressing the broadcaster by name, the gunman demanded cash.

Observing that the robber was obviously nervous, Mr Sawyer was said to have pleaded with the gunman not to shoot as he handed over his money and cellphone. This tactic, sources said, could have been the deciding factor to save the broadcaster's life during this harrowing experience.

With the culprit making good his escape by foot, Mr Sawyer was rushed to the hospital by private vehicle and underwent minor surgery for his injuries.

He has since been discharged.

Mr Sawyer currently holds the post of Vice President of News and Current Affairs at the Broadcasting Corporation of the Bahamas (BCB).

Yesterday, the corporation's general manager, Edwin Lightbourne wished Mr Sawyer a speedy recovery while he convalesces at home.

"Mr Sawyer did report he had an incident at his home this morning where he was robbed and gun butted. We are concerned, but he has been seen by his medical physician and is currently at home. We understand the police are doing their investigations and we hope they will be fruitful very shortly. Of course we empathise with him because it was a horrifying situation for him I suppose," he said.
