A New Providence fuel retailer yesterday blamed diminishing profits and rising costs for his decision to let go 10 employees and take his Esso gas station in Oakes Field totally "self-service" this week.

Dan Knowles, also owner of ground transportation company, Dan Knowles Tours, said he had no option but to make the move -which makes him one of the first to do so - in order to lower his costs and keep his station operational.

He predicts other gas station operators will take similar steps as they continue to be challenged with the question of how to survive as their profit margins shrink.
