While seemingly harmless, the use of Single-use disposable plastic bags is suffocating our planet. In the US alone, it is estimated that up to 60,000 plastic bags are consumed every five seconds, making plastic bags one of the most common types of litter worldwide and prompting governments around the world to ban their use.
The government of The Bahamas has announced its own strategy to outlaw single use plastics here at home by the year 2020.
Simultaneously, many organizations, including Grand Bahama’s own KGBC, are working daily to mitigate the negative impact of plastic pollution.
This year during their month of Anti-Litter activities, the KGBC partnered with one of the country’s top grocers, AML Foods, on a new campaign designed to discourage the proliferation of single use plastic bags.
“Many of us do not think about where our plastic bags end up once we discard of them” explained Olethea Gardiner, Co-Chair of the KGBC.
“With the help of AML Foods and Solomon’s we hope to change the culture and encourage shoppers to opt for reusable bags instead.”
The Brown Bag campaign saw the KGBC join forces with 15 local and international organizations including; Island Wholesale, Super Value USA, Organic Valley, One Eleuthera, Scotiabank, Pelican Bay, Paint Fair, Nassau Agencies, UNFI, KeHe Distributors, Coca-Cola, Orlando Provisions, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Thumann’s to purchase 15 thousand reusable bags.
The branded bags also featured logos from the various companies and the bags were distributed at both Solomon’s locations at Sea Horse plaza, and Queen’s Highway over two days.
“This initiative is really close to our hearts” explained Renea Bastian, AML Vice President of Marketing & Communication.
“We understand that the nature of our business has contributed to the proliferation of plastic bags so we know we have a responsibility to help change the habits of our customers”.
The high quality reusable bags allow customers to limit the number of single use bags which can collect in individual households and reduces their overall carbon footprint.
The bags are also available for purchase from any Solomon’s location for just two dollars and twenty-nine cents.
“We hope more and more Bahamians embrace this idea of having a smaller carbon footprint” said Gardiner.
“This is just one of many ways they begin the process for the 2020 change. One we hope will protect our environment and help us keep our beautiful island clean.”
Joining forces with AML Foods (Solomons) and more than 15 other local operations, the Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee took its message of conservation to shoppers on Grand Bahama Island where they assisted with the distribution of reusable grocery bags to customers in hopes of reducing the number of single-use plastic bags impacting the local environment.
