Lawyers claim electronic monitoring braces 'violate presumption of innocence'

FREEPORT: Two Grand Bahama lawyers claim electronic monitoring bracelets violate the presumption of innocence of persons charged with alleged offences before the courts.

Rawle Maynard and Constance McDonald spoke out on a radio talk show.

Ms McDonald said the Bahamas constitution has a presumption of innocence, and persons charged with a crime are innocent until proven guilty.

Mr Maynard said: "The moment you take away someone's liberty you have violated the presumption of innocence.

"You are only supposed to lose your liberty if you have been found guilty of a crime or in some case there is probably cause, ...
