Press Club in Labour of Love Campaign

Just before Valentine’s Day, The Bahamas Press Club 2014 launched its Labour of Love Campaign on Saturday February 10 2018 to assist Mrs. Elizabeth McPhee, whose Nassau Village home was severely damaged during Hurricanes Matthew and Irma in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

The project also involves the services of the Kiwanis Club of New Providence, Woodside Brokers & Insurance, Impact Waste Limited, which provided the dumpster for the debris from clean up of the home, and other organizations.

On hand for the preliminary work were Mr. Anthony Capron, President, Bahamas Press Club; Lindsay Thompson, Secretary, The Bahamas Press Club; Vincent Vaughan, Treasurer, The Bahamas Press Club; Shelly Lewis, Coordinator Disaster Relief, Bahamas Press Club; Marilyn Johnson, President, Kiwanis Club of New Providence; Michelle White, Global 99.5FM; and Tanya Woodside, Woodside Brokers & Insurance.

Contractor is Allan J Bain, who explained that the scope of works involves replacing the entire roof, which would take about 4 weeks to complete.

The Press Club and its partners started the project with a T-shirt drive following Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Funds raised went to assist residents impacted by the devastating storm. However this year it was decided to assist Mrs. Mcphee in her much needed home repairs after suffering from both Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, Press Club President Capron observed that anyone could be impacted by natural disasters. Hence, the partnership would go along way in assisting residents in restoring their homes to livable conditions.

Mrs. Johnson too said that Kiwanis, as a service club organization was pleased to be part of the Labour of Love Project. “It is what we do; all over the world.” Mrs. McPhee, who lives with her son, has been in that home for some 27 years. He thanked all involved for their efforts in replacing the roof over their heads.
