'Mother' of track field and softball dies at 79

MONICA Woodside, considered to be the "mother" of track and field and softball in the country, died at the Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday night. She was 79.

The mother of eight children - one of whom died years ago - passed away around 8:30pm. She was admitted for treatment for fluid in her lungs and she suffered a massive stroke while in the hospital. She is survived by her ailing husband, Joseph Sr, and children Judith Scavalla, Linda Major, Melonie Cidel, Carol Phillips, Joanne Powel, Joseph Jr, Dawn Johnson and Dianne Woodside.

The third oldest child, Rosie Benoit, passed away in 1992.
