Bahamian talent and culture will be on display during the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 with a new addition to the tournament's entertainment lineup. Local dancers will take to the sand with the professional beach soccer cheerleaders.
Dancers Kieasha Adderley and Myrkeeva Johnson were chosen on the spot to join the squad after a special casting in February in New Providence during the CONCACAF Championship, after eight dancers got the chance to audition.
Cheerleaders Coordinator Idaira Rodriguez conducted the casting in two parts -- the Bahamian dancers were taught a short choreographed piece, and asked to "freestyle" and show off their unique styles and Bahamian rhythm.
"I was highly surprised by the outcome of the casting. I am very happy with the result, and I am looking forward to working with the girls. It will be a great experience for everyone. I can't wait for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup to begin," said Rodriquez.
Two additional dancers will be surprised in the coming weeks when they are added to the dance team that will compete during the April 27-May 7 tournament. The performances will broadcast live to millions of viewers all over the world.
"It was wonderful. I am so excited to have this type of opportunity because it doesn't come around that often since we are from such a small country. To be chosen for something big and international like this and to be chosen right on the spot is amazing," said Johnson.
"It was a wonderful experience. I've been dancing for so long and I haven't had a chance to experience anything like this. To audition for something as big as this, I'm just very ecstatic about the opportunity," said Adderley.
Cheerleader Marta Plasencia, who taught the choreography, noted that she was pleasantly surprised by the talent.
"First because of the level they have and also because we saw different styles that can add a special touch and enrich the whole crew," said Plasencia.
"I think that it will make for an explosive combination since the Bahamian girls obviously have a different look and a different dancing culture. I'm sure we will learn a lot from them," said cheerleader Giovanna Lee.
Locals now have a lot more to take in at the World Cup -- the most exciting beach soccer festival in the world; the highest level of talent and tricks by the best 16 teams in the world; and to cheer on the Bahamian dancers.
Admission into the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 is free. VIP packages are also available for purchase.
