Originally scheduled for last weekend, the lightweight bout between Edner Cherry, a professional boxer with Bahamian roots, and American Omar Douglas has been moved to April 4.
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) announced yesterday that the scheduled 10-round bout would be the main event of the three-fight card that will be staged at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The lightweight showdown will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports 1, beginning at 9 p.m.
The bout between Cherry and Douglas was originally scheduled to be on the undercard of the PBC card headlined by heavyweights Travis Kauffman and Amir Mansour. However, PBC organizers decided that the fight should headline its own show.
Following the announcement of the new fight date, Cherry (35-7-2, 19 KOs) said that he's excited to get back in the ring. Despite the edge Cherry has in terms of experience, he credits Douglas for being a tough, physical fighter. Cherry, who trains and fights out of Wauchula, Florida, said that he thinks this fight will be a slugfest that goes down to the wire.
"I have to give Douglas credit for taking this fight," Cherry said. "We're both very hungry, so I think this is going to be entertaining for the fans. Omar is coming off of a loss so I know he needs this win. We both come with speed and power. It's going to be fireworks on April 4."
Douglas (17-1, 12 KOs) suffered the first loss of his career in his last fight, a loss on points to former world champion Javier Fortuna. The 26-year-old from Wilmington, Delaware said he plans to use this fight as a springboard back to the upper echelon of the lightweight division.
"I'm looking forward to a great fight," Douglas said. "I have a good, experienced opponent in front of me. This fight will show my full arsenal because I know he's going to bring pressure. I can box or come forward. I plan to use my jab to win rounds and get this victory."
The co-feature will see lightweight prospects Stephen Fulton (10-0, 5 KOs) and Luis Rosario (8-0, 7 KOs) clash in an eight-round contest.
The live telecast will also include an eight-round junior lightweight bout between Frank DeAlba (21-2-2, 9 KOs) and Ryan Kielczweski (26-2, 8 KOs).
