A man shot on Balfour Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. yesterday died in hospital, according to authorities.
He was identified as Benjamin Anderson, of Ida Street, off Balfour Avenue.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean said a gunman, who exited a vehicle that pulled up alongside Anderson, shot him several times.
Dean suggested that Anderson was not an "innocent person".
"This victim was known to us," he told reporters on the scene.
"He was in and out of the system.
"He was charged with murder; everything, you name it.
"These are the victims we are dealing with.
"These are not just so-called innocent persons.
"So, we see, either the suspect is involved in a life of crime or the victim is involved in a life of crime.
"For the most part, they know each other."
Police issued a bulletin for Anderson in connection with several armed robberies in July 2016.
On January 30, 2013, a nine-member jury unanimously acquitted Anderson of attempted armed robbery and the attempted murder of Ronald Miller at Key West Street on April 22, 2011.
He was also wanted for questioning in connection with a murder in Fox Hill in April 2011.
Yesterday's shooting marks the 20th murder for the year, representing an 82 percent increase in murders compared to this time last year.
As of February 7, 2016, there were 11 murders.
This is the sixth killing in the last week.
Police made their usual appeal for assistance with information regarding yesterday's shooting, crediting the public's tips for solving most of the murders in 2016.
"The members of the public have been extremely good to us last year," Dean said.
"They helped us solve most of our murders.
"We are appealing to members of the public once again to help us."
Dean said authorities are resolved in providing coverage and patrols throughout New Providence.
"People have to live their normal lives," he said.
"In order for people to live their normal lives, they want to see police presence on the streets.
"That is what we are doing consistently with our policing plan.
"We have police presence, police officers around the clock, 24/7.
"We are recovering firearms off the street.
"We are arresting people.
"We have some of these people we are arresting, then [they're] getting bail tomorrow.
"... We don't care. We have to do our job, because the members of the public want to know that these people remain behind bars."
Dean said police officers are making good inroads in pursuing local and international drug and gun peddlars.
He admonished those in the public who decry the crime problem while continuing to benefit from such illegal activities.
