Bahamasair rules out carry-on luggage fee

As five major US airlines serving The Bahamas pledge NOT to introduce a controversial carry-on luggage charge, Bahamasair has its own stance on the fee saying: "We haven't given it a second thought."

Managing Director of Bahamasair Henry Woods said his company had no plans

whatsoever to introduce a similar charge to that of Spirit Airlines, which has caused waves throughout the airline industry.

Spirit, which connects Nassau with the US, Latin America and other parts of the Caribbean, will soon start charging customers up to $45 for carry-on luggage.

However Woods said: "We know what's going on and we know what their plans are but we aren't looking at doing it, in fact we haven't given it a second thought."

Over the weekend, five US airlines serving The Bahamas also announced a similar stance as New York Senator Charles Schumer revealed to media that American, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, US Airways and JetBlue Airways had each committed to him that they would not institute fees for carry-on bags. He said he was hopeful other carriers would follow suit.

Schumer said he planned to meet with Spirit Airlines leadership in the coming week.

But Ben Baldanza, Spirit's president and CEO, insisted that his airline still plans to go forward with its carryon bag fee.

Baldanza said: "Our plan was never predicated on anyone matching us. The fact that other people are saying they won't has never changed our view that this is right."

Spirit Air are terrible now. I used to use them all the time, but never again.
