Prime Minister Perry Christie said that "active negotiations" are ongoing for the acquisition and operation of major hotel assets in Lucaya.

Speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday Christie said, "Active negotiations are ongoing and are at an advanced stage with prospective hotel, casino, airline and tour operator interests for the acquisition and operation of major hotel assets in Lucaya. A successful outcome is essential to both the short and long term prospects of the Grand Bahama tourism industry."

Major hotel operators in Lucaya sustained severe damage during the passage of Hurricane Matthew and remain temporary closed. The Grand Lucayan announced that sections of the Lighthouse Pointe resort are expected to reopen as of yesterday.

Last week, Christie said he wrote to the principals of Hutchison Whampoa, who are the owners of the container port and the three hotels in Lucaya with the largest room inventory in Freeport, "appealing to them to effect repairs as soon as possible and in time for the winter season".

He said, "I have also pointed out the repair and reopening of the hotels would put them in a better position to positively influence the possible sale of the properties."

Christie also confirmed yesterday that approval was given by the National Economic Council (NEC) for the conclusion of a heads of agreement with Carnival Cruise Lines for a $200 million cruise project in East Grand Bahama.

He said that the project would have a major impact on the economy of East Grand Bahama and provide economic opportunities for entrepreneurs and employees in Freeport.
