Lawyer charged with libel

A lawyer who was fired from the Royal Bahamas Police Force last year has been accused of publishing defamatory statements about the police commissioner and an assistant commissioner.

Maria Daxon, 49, of Pinewood Gardens, was yesterday arraigned before Acting Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes on two counts of intentional libel.

Prosecutors allege that Daxon on August 26 and 30 published writings about both Commissioner Ellison Greenslade and Assistant Commissioner Leon Bethel that would expose them to general hatred, contempt or ridicule.

Daxon, who was represented by attorneys Glendon Rolle and Wilver Deleveaux, pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected to have a trial before Forbes instead of the Supreme Court.

Asked if he was objecting to bail, the prosecutor assistant superintendent of police Marlon Fulford told the court that it did not have the jurisdiction to grant bail.

Daxon has been remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services. Her trial is set to begin on October 5.
