The Customs Department yesterday said it had been investigating "at least two" car dealerships who it believes may have been submitting false, under-valued invoices for imported vehicles, but has so far not obtained enough evidence to take further action.
In fact, Comptroller Glenn Gomez said the evidence so far suggests that the dealers initially suspected of illicit behaviour may have found a legitimate avenue of which other, more established, Bahamas-based car dealers are not aware. Through this they have been able to purchase used Japanese cars at a significantly lower cost.
