Bahamian sprinter Mackey on the comeback trail

After dealing with a plethora of injuries last season, Bahamian sprinter Trevorvano Mackey is back at home training, and looking to get back on track with the help of coach Shaun Miller and Bahamas Speed Dynamics. Mackey, 23, sat out most of his senior season at Texas Tech due to a nagging groin injury he suffered early in the season. He feels stronger than ever now.

"After dealing with the injury, it was a little tough for me to get my weight under control," said Mackey. "I had to sit out a couple of months, and due to the inactivity I put on a little more weight than I was comfortable with. Recently though, I've gotten that under control, and since moving back home, things have been progressing well. Training is going good, because right now I'm a lot more focused. Aside from the fact that I no longer have to deal with school, I have a training partner (Stephen Newbold) who helps keep me motivated on daily basis."

Mackey was one of the country's premier sprinters over the past few years, establishing personal best times in both short sprints and qualifying for both major global meets - the Olympics in 2012 and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in 2013. He has personal best times of 10.21 seconds in the 100 meters (m) and 20.46 seconds in the 200m.

"Right now, my goals are really to stay healthy and set some new personal bests," Mackey said. "I want to get in the low 20-second barrier in the 200m, and once I do that, I know my times in the 100m will fall in line. I'm putting most of my focus into the 200m, but I'll still use the 100 to maintain foot speed. By the end of the season I expect to see some much better times."

In 2014, Mackey earned an All-American honorable mention in the 200m, finishing 19th at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Outdoor Championships in 21.07 seconds. He also earned Big 12 honors in both short sprints that same year.

Mackey was also a key member of The Bahamas' team that traveled to the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Under-23 Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, in 2014. Mackey won two of the four medals for The Bahamas at that meet with a bronze in the men's 100m dash in 10.30 seconds and a silver in the 200m in a personal best time of 20.46 seconds.
