The teams for the much-anticipated Popeyes Bahamas Bowl on Christmas Eve have arrived and are already being charmed by the warmth and beauty of The Bahamas. During a welcome reception at Atlantis Paradise Island, the Western Michigan Broncos and the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders could not hide their excitement about arriving in The Bahamas.
"Excited is probably an understatement. There's only a handful of guys on our team who have been to The Bahamas, and it is such an amazing opportunity to be at the Atlantis resort. We are really looking forward to it," said Zack Terrell, quarterback of Western Michigan.
"There's a lot of things to do and great culture but for us it's about bridging the gap between fun and business. We are going to have a blast and soak it all up. We want to do everything we can, but when it's time to work, it's time to work. I'm looking forward to the event where we are going to teach the kids how to play football and I want to swim with the dolphins. That's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am really looking forward to it."
Head Coach of Western Michigan Philip Fleck said his team is ecstatic to be in The Bahamas.
"I've never seen a group of players be so excited to get on a plane to go play a football game. We are so excited to represent the United States. This is close to an Olympic type of environment. They want to get on the water slides and swim with the sharks and do whatever. If you ask the majority of the kids, they can't wait to experience Bahamian culture," he said.
Patrick McNeil, who plays defense for Middle Tennessee, said he's excited for the weather change.
"I like the look of the beach. I'm trying to see what The Bahamas has to offer. Whatever the resort has to offer I'm trying to do it," he said.
Meanwhile, Jared Singletary said he's here for business but will have a little fun as well.
"It's a lifetime experience that we will never forget. There's a bunch of guys on the team who have never been here. We're excited to swim with the dolphins," he said.
The Popeyes Bahamas Bowl will kick off at noon at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. Before kickoff, there will be a tailgate party, complete with a BBQ competition, face painting and games for the kids. During half-time, there will also be an exciting face-off between the Saxons and Valley Boys Junkanoo groups.
