Shipyard staff reach into their pockets to donate

After the Management team of the Grand Bahama Shipyard learned about the devastation due hurricane Joaquin in the southern Bahamas, they challenged their staff to donate to the cause.

With staff donations reaching an incredible $21,000 the company matched the staff donations and was able to present a check to the committee responsible for the reconstruction efforts in the Southern Bahamas. Director Smith made the check presentation last week in the amount of $42,000 to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“At GBS, we support the community in any way that we can and when we found out about the destruction caused by the storm we knew we had to do something,” said Reuben Byrd COO at Grand Bahama Shipyard.

“I think that our staff stepping up to the challenge was amazing because we all have to help each other in situations like this.  Natural disasters are something that no one can prepare for, so lending a helping hand is really important. We’re always encouraging our employees to give back and it has been great to see them do it.”

“We have always played an active role in the community when it comes to giving back,” said David Richardson. “In Grand Bahama we have firsthand knowledge of what a hurricane can do. Everyone chipped in to do what they could and it was a great feeling to see everyone helping out.”

Recently the GB Shipyard team donated $10,000 from their annual golf tournament to Urban Renewal and $96,000 from their annual fishing tournament to community organisations and their apprentices just finished a beach clean up with Keep Grand Bahama Clean.
