San Salvador Island Administrator Theophilus Cox said yesterday skeletal remains of a person who was buried at a cemetery on that island were unearthed by storm surges from Hurricane Joaquin. The cemetery, located near the beach on Fortune Hill, has not been used in 10 years, Cox told The Guardian.

"The cemetery is on the beach and the surge from the storm washed away a portion of it," he said.

The skull and what appears to be a femur washed up as a result.

"We don't know who it belongs to," Cox said. "This is an old cemetery."

Cox said officials are currently working on repairing the cemetery. Pictures of the skull were circulating among residents on the islands. Hurricane Joaquin, a Category 4 storm, devastated the central and southern Bahamas on October 1 and 2. San Salvador was one of several islands severely impacted by the storm.
