Striking out breast cancer at Paint the Lanes Pink

Fri, Sep 25th 2015, 12:40 AM

Mario’s Bowling and Family Entertainment Palace encourage you to deliver strikes against breast cancer at their second Paint The Lanes Pink event.

“Paint the Lanes Pink: Bowl, Browse, Buy … Bon Appetit” is a bowling and fundraising event featuring corporate and local bowlers as well as an expo day with goodies for sale and sampling from dozens of local entrepreneurs showcasing jewelry, beauty and cosmetics, children’s and ladies apparel, handbags, pastry and sweets, hair accessories, health and fitness, home décor, money management, hair products, footwear, spa treatments, undergarments and lingerie — all in support of finding a breast cancer cure and awareness.

In an effort to continue to shine light on an issue that affects both women and men being diagnosed with breast cancer, Mario’s Bowling will host their 4th annual event on Friday, October 2 between 6 p.m. and 9 pm. and Saturday, October 3 between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to raise awareness, encourage contributions to the various cancer organizations and support groups in a fun and exciting way. A main stage will showcase entertainment and live demonstrations.

During the event, people battling breast and those who may have succumbed to the cancer battle can be celebrated in a special offering by loved ones. For a $20 donation, a bowling lane will be dedicated to that person. Their name and image of the person being honored will appear on the screens in their honor, with proceeds donated to The Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group.

“Mario’s Bowling and ‘Paint the Lanes Pink: Bowl, Browse, Buy… Bon Appetit’ is committed to supporting breast cancer awareness, patient and family care, and educating persons about the importance of early detection,” said Greg Wilkinson. “This event allows us to celebrate, empower and educate through community togetherness. We aim to celebrate and honor the lives of women and men whom breast cancer has touched, through music, fashion, entertainment, and the power of knowledge. We look forward to celebrating saving lives with [patrons] as we bowl, browse fashion and beauty products, buy raffle tickets to win fabulous prizes, sip on delicious pink cocktails, snack on scrumptious pastries, and munch on tasty hors d’oeuvres.”

According to health statistics, The Bahamas is home to the highest incidence of inherited breast cancer worldwide, and that 34 percent of Bahamian women diagnosed with breast cancer are 20 to 44-years old in comparison to 12 percent of American women under the age of 44. And that nearly 45 percent of Bahamian women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are at the late stage, compared to only about 12 percent of female breast cancer patients in the United States.

Concerned about these statistics, Mario’s Bowling introduced Paint The Lanes Pink to bring awareness to this pressing issue and facilitate further research into the mutations of the BRCA1 gene unique to The Bahamas, the first step in overcoming the terrible legacy of aggressive and deadly breast cancer — a leading cause of death in Bahamian women.
