A ribbon-cutting ceremony, September 10, marked the official opening of new Fire Safety, Surveillance, and Nurse’s Facilities at the Downtown Straw Market, Woodes Rogers Wharf, Bay Street.

Government officials, Straw Market vendors, members of the Straw Market Authority recognized the occasion with a special ceremony in the Downtown Straw Market.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development said the First Aid Station is “essential” for creating a first class facility.

“Truly, it is a first grade facility, outfitted with basic first aid supplies, equipment and furniture required to render assistance until ambulance services arrive,” he said.

The Straw Market Authority has also installed a CCTV surveillance camera in the Downtown Straw Market and organized a Surveillance Unit to facilitate the system.

Mr. Davis acknowledged appreciation to the Hon. Bernard Nottage, Minister of National Security, and Ellison Greenslade, Commissioner of Police for ensuring that the market complies with fire and safety regulations.

“We are confident that this innovation will assist in combating crime and the elimination of unscrupulous activities in the market,” Mr. Davis added.

A Trained Clinical Nurse will be available 7 days a week during operational hours of the market to provide basic services to clients including health care education and health screening services.

Additionally, the bathrooms in the Downtown Straw Market have been renovated to now include industrial hand blowers.

Minister Nottage said surveillance is very important because complaints are received regularly about criminal activities on Woodes Rogers Wharf.

“The pilfering that goes on, the selling of illicit substances do not auger well for our country. So I’m begging you to be the gatekeepers for New Providence and to realize that when criminal activity occurs it has an adverse effect on your way of living,” he said.

Kevin Simmons, Chairman of the Straw Market Authority also participated in the ceremonies.
