Higgs & Higgs team leading the way for The Bahamas

The race for the Arthur Ziadie Trophy is down to the final day of competition at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships (CAGC) in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

After three rounds of play, the Higgs & Higgs team (males 60 years of age and over) of Vernon Wells and Bobby Rose continue to lead the way. The duo shot an even par-72 yesterday, to increase their lead to four strokes over their nearest competitor. They have a three-day total of 211, leading the way for the Super Seniors Cup. Fabian Lee Foon and Barry Ferdinand of Trinidad & Tobago sit in second with a total of 215 after shooting a one over par-73 yesterday, and Jamaicans Peter Chin and Easton Williams occupy the third spot with a 217 total after shooting an even par-72.

The Ramon Baez team (males 35 years and over) of cousins John and Peter McIntosh are currently tied for third with a 220 total. They struggled, shooting a four over par 76 yesterday, allowing the Jamaicans and the team from the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) to pull into the three-way tie for third. The Jamaican team of Gifford Wilmot and Mark Newnham shot an even par 72, and the USVI team of Kevin Ferris and Nils Hahnfeld finished with a one over par 73. All three nations have a total of 220 after three days of competition.

The team of Juan Campusano and Bienvenido Guerrero, from the Dominican Republic, is significantly ahead after shooting a third-round five under par 67 yesterday. They have a three-day total of 208 to lead their nearest competitors by 10 strokes, putting a virtual lock on the Mid Amateur Cup. The Bajan team of Carlsen Leacock and Elvis Medford sit in second place with a three-day total of 218. They shot a three over par 75 yesterday.

In the race for the George Teale Memorial Trophy (ladies), the Bahamian trio of Inecia Rolle, Taneka Sandiford and Sheridan Dillon-Robinson currently sit in the sixth spot with a 65 over par 497. Collectively, they shot a 22 over par 166 yesterday. The two best scores are recorded, and those were turned in by Dillon-Robinson with a 10 over par 82 and Rolle with a 12 over par 84. Overall, Rolle leads the way with a three-day total of 250, Sandiford has shot a 253 through three rounds, and Dillon-Robinson has a three-day total of 268. On the leaderboard, they sit in the 14th, 15th and 19th spots respectively.

The top three nations are Puerto Rico leading the way with a 32 over par 464, the USVI in second with a three-round total of 35 over par 467, and Trinidad & Tobago in third with a 40 over par 472. The Francis/Steele-Perkins team (men 50 years and over) of George Swann and Horace Miller-Major are tied for sixth after three days of competition with a total of 219. They had a good day on the greens, shooting a one under par 71 yesterday. The Puerto Rican team of Mario Carbia and Felipe Colon also have a three-day total of 219.

The Trinidad & Tobago pair of Carlos Baynes and Richard Camacho currently lead the way for the Senior Cup with a five under par 211 total. They shot a two under par 70 yesterday. The Bajan team of Robert Piggot and Michael Haynes sit in the second spot with a three day total of 214 after shooting a one under par 71 yesterday, and the Jamaica team of Keith Stein and Radcliff Knibbs is third with a three-day total of 216. They also shot a one under par 71 yesterday.

Finally, The Bahamas' Hoerman Cup team (regulars) of Devaughn Robinson, Benjamin Davis Jr., Asif Robinson, Elijah Delancy and Nolan Johnson sit in the seventh spot going into the final day of competition. The team has a total of 91 over par 955 after three rounds. Hometown favorite Jamaica and the Dominican Republic (DR) lead the way as they are tied for first with a 37 over par 901. Jamaica was a woeful 11 over par 299 yesterday, and the DR took advantage as they pulled even with a five over par 293 yesterday. Puerto Rico is third with a 56 over par 920 after three days of competition.

Individually for The Bahamas, Devaughn Robinson shot a two under par 70 yesterday, Davis had a four over par 76, and Asif Robinson, Delancy and Johnson all shot 13 over par 85. Devaughn Robinson has a two over par 218 and is second overall after three rounds, Davis has a three-day total of 231 and is in three-way tie for 13th overall, Asif Robinson has shot a 34 over par 250 and is tied for 32nd overall, Delancy has turned in a 40 over par 256 and is 34th overall, and Johnson has a three-day score of 51 over par 267 and is tied for 38th overall.

The championships wrap up today at the Half Moon Golf Resort & Spa and the Cinnamon Hill Golf Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica. A total of 10 countries are competing for the Arthur Ziadie Trophy, given to the overall winner of the four-day tournament. The Head Coach of the team is Harry Fountain and the Bahamas Golf Federation's (BGF) executive member travelling with the team is Fred Wright.
