Payments for electricians at Baha Mar, but all 'not paid in full'

Some electricians on the Baha Mar construction site have finally been paid in full and others partially paid, according to Mervin Bethell, a spokesperson for the electricians.

"Out of 100 percent, I think around 70 percent were paid basically, but not in full," Bethell said. "About 10 percent of the workers were paid in full in regards to their salaries."

Bethell said he and several other workers are still owed tens of thousands of dollars. The workers, who were subcontracted by Yates-Osprey Construction, had not been paid in six weeks, according to Bethell.

The Nassau Guardian interviewed several of the workers last Thursday at Baha Mar as they attempted to speak to Osprey officials. Bethell said following that attempt there was some progress, but several workers are operating in good faith.

When asked whether there were any anxieties about the balance owed to the workers, Bethell said, "I spoke with management at the beginning of this week, and they told me they would fully resolve this issue by the end of this week."

It was unclear why the workers had not been paid. Baha Mar officials have advised The Guardian to contact Osprey. The $3.5 billion resort project has faced three delays. There have been increasing concerns about the fate of the resort.

In a letter to staff on May 1, Baha Mar CEO Sarkis Izmirlian advised that the company had been unable to get a commitment from its contractors, China Construction America, on the completion date. Since then, Prime Minister Perry Christie said the developer and general contractor have been working to resolve their outstanding issues. Christie said last week that Izmirlian does not have a money issue. Outside the House of Assembly yesterday, the prime minister said he hoped resolution is achieved soon.
