Investing in your health is a great way to invest in yourself, and over 400 employees from Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS), along with their families, invested in their health over the weekend at GBS’ first health fair.

The health fair, held at Nesbitt Rentals, was designed to encourage employees to pay more attention to their health and welfare. “Our employees are our number one asset,” said Reuben Byrd, GBS Chief Operation Officer.“So, bringing them knowledge of health services that are readily available here on the island and nearby in Florida that they can use to improve their health is something that was really important to us.”

Services available at the health fair included free health screenings, education on the importance of good nutrition and exercise sessions with fitness instructors. One of the organisers of the health fair, Sabrina Sweeting, GBS Occupational Health Nurse, noted, “Our employees at the yard often work long hours and are extremely committed to their jobs; however that same commitment isn’t given to maintaining their health and wellbeing.” As a result, any employee whose health screenings discovered possible problems were referred to physicians who could properly handle those conditions.

Vendors at the fair included Easy Dental Care, Atlantic Medical, Cleveland Clinic, Health Enhancement Pharmacy, New Life Vegetation, Pavilion Dental, Baptist Health International, The Compound, Renu Day Spa, Nature’s Pearl, Blessed Touch Massage Therapy, Marshall’s Catering and Eatery and Pollo Tropical.

“We are really trying to promote a healthy lifestyle for our staff members and their families, and our vendors helped to promote a number of ways they can be healthy,” said Kay Smith, Director of Human Resources and Community Relations. “Thanks to this fair, our staff have learned about healthier foods, how to prepare healthier meals, healthier alternatives for meals and beverages, they were able to visit with doctors and nurses, and our vendors were all happy to help with this campaign.”

A special thanks was also given to Nesbitt Rentals, who kept the staff’s children entertained in a safe play area while they and their spouses were able to focus on the health screenings.
