BNT takes members on a journey under the sea

Patrons of the Bahamas National Trust's (BNT) public lecture series during February were able to go on a journey exploring the world's oceans from their seats as the Grand Bahama Regional Branch of the BNT saw another packed house at its lecture on Opulent Oceans, featuring Dr. Melanie Stiassny of the American Museum of Natural History.

Stiassny provided insight on selected marine species highlighted in her book Opulent Oceans, as well as provided accompanying illustrations from the American Museum of Natural History's rare book collections. The lecture took the audience back in time, introducing some of the pioneering explorers that defined oceanography and completed remarkable work that future generations can learn from.

"Dr. Stiassny was phenomenal," said Lakeshia Anderson, Grand Bahama National Parks manager. "Her interpretation of Opulent Oceans made us all eager to read more about the marine life found in the depths of the world's oceans and the innovators behind these discoveries."

The lecture on Opulent Oceans was the second in the monthly series organized by the Grand Bahama Regional Branch of the Bahamas National Trust. They are free and open to the public. The public lectures provide an opportunity for people to learn about the natural beauty and history of The Bahamas and the work of the BNT. After the lecture, Dr. Stiassny's book was available for sale, with the first ten book sales generously donated to the BNT and the remaining sales going toward her research. A signed book copy was also donated to The Rand Nature Centre's library and guests that purchased a copy of Opulent Oceans on the night were able to have it signed.

Anderson noted, "The BNT has a long history with the American Museum of Natural History, as they are a founding member of our governing Council. As such we are extremely grateful to have Dr. Stiassny present on such historical pieces of work found within the museum's research library. We are even more thankful for her donation from book sales and the new addition to our library."

The next public lecture will be held on Tuesday, March 17 at The Rand Nature Centre, with the presenter and topic to be announced. The BNT encourages all to attend its public lectures and to like its Facebook page to learn about this and other upcoming BNT events.
