Delay in trial for accused in McCartney murder

The trial of four people accused of the high-profile murder of Kurt McCartney has been pushed back until later this year.

Lyndera Curry, Sumya Ingraham, both of Plantol Street, Thorne Edwards, and Okell Farrington, both of Pinewood Gardens, were scheduled to be tried on Monday in connection with the October 24, 2013 murder and armed robbery of McCartney. That trial date was vacated yesterday and a new date set for September 28, which will displace another scheduled trial. The delay was partly due to the late assignment of attorneys for Edwards and Farrington, just over a week ago.

Jairam Mangra has been appointed to represent Edwards and Ramona Farquharson-Seymour has been appointed to represent Ingraham. They have not met with their clients since their assignments, the court was told. Additionally, there has been no case management in respect of those defendants, according to Neil Brathwaite, the assistant director of public prosecutions. A case management hearing in respect of those defendants has been set for March 27.

Curry, Ingraham, Edwards and Farrington are accused of killing McCartney during the course of an armed robbery. Prosecutors say he was robbed of a 2007 Hummer, worth $37,000. A fifth man, Terry Delancy, the owner of Virgo Car Rental, is separately being charged as an accessory after the fact. He is accused of enabling Curry, Ingraham, Edwards and Farrington to avoid due process of the law.

McCartney, who was the brother of Democratic National Alliance Leader Branville McCartney, was shot and killed in Gambier Village. His Hummer was discovered by police a few hours after his death east of Traveller's Rest Restaurant.

Geoffrey Farquharson represents Curry and Phillip Hilton represents Farrington. Ian Cargill appears for Delancy.
