The Customs Department has a significant responsibility in that it is the primary revenue collection agency for the government, said the Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville during the special church service in celebration of 26th Annual International Customs Day.

The Minister's remarks were during the service at Life Community Church in Caravel Beach. He said "The Bahamas Customs and Excise Department is one of the most important divisions of government as its key function is the collection and protection of the revenue of The Bahamas. In fact, the Customs Department is the primary revenue collection agency of the Government of The Bahamas, which means it has a significant responsibility.

"Officers, as you celebrate another International Day, I wish to assure you that the invaluable contribution that you make to our island and country and its development over the years has not gone unnoticed, and pledge my ministry's and by extension, the government's support as you endeavour to modernise and provide professional quality service to our clients."

The Minister further congratulated the 150 officers who protect the government's revenue and borders in and around Grand Bahama. "I encourage you to keep up the excellent work and to remain honest, dedicated and fair in the fulfilment of your obligations and responsibilities."

Other activities held to celebrate the week were: In-House Raffle of a 32" TV (January 21); International Customs Day (January 26) during which flyers were distributed about 'The Customs' new procedures and duty rates; male staff of the department mentored young men and made a donation of a lawn mower to Genesis Academy (January 28); and a family fun day (January 31) at the Grand Bahama Sports Complex to which all agencies of law enforcement were invited.
