In the spirit of improving high school sports here in the country, Daun Ferguson of Bahamian descent, who is the owner of a number of salons in Miami, Florida, and the founder of Daun Cosmetics, will be supplying all Gatorade and Gatorade equipment for every game of the 2015 Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic that will be played at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium in February.
"I'm married to a basketball player, and we were in Nassau when the tournament was going on last year and saw that it needed some kind of upgrade," she said. "I may not know a lot about sports, but my husband does and he set up some things to help out next month."
Her husband Wesley Frater is the founder of Tournament of Champions (TOC) Incorporated, which organizes a large number of the major basketball and football tournaments in Florida. TOC has also put on clinics and youth seminars in Haiti, Jamaica and a number of other countries in the region.
"She may not know the difference between a touchdown and a slam dunk, but she had the human need to do something for the community and for the tournament," he said. "She told me that I'm always helping out in other countries and that I'm always so active in the states, but now it's time to do something to help out in The Bahamas, so she went into my warehouse and picked out everything that she needed. She wants to see improvement in the country and I'm glad that I can help her out with that."
To go along with the donations, Ferguson also hired former National Basketball Association (NBA) player Wali Jones to speak to the players during the tournament. The Detroit Pistons picked Jones in the third round of the 1964 NBA Draft. He played for four teams over the span of his 12-year career, and was a member of the 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers team that won an NBA Championship. He also played for the Baltimore Bullets, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association (ABA). Ferguson's total donation to the tournament is worth just over $10,000.
"Wali is one of the consultants at my firm," said Frater. " He is a good guy, a great speaker and a legend in the game. He was a former teammate of basketball great Wilt Chamberlain and knows a lot about the game."
Also on February 22, Ferguson will be in town to unveil her new make-up line at the Atlantis Hotel. That will be done at 3 p.m. She will be giving tutorials and doing a number of other demonstrations. Those interested in learning more about Ferguson are asked to visit the website www.dauncosmetics.com.
The Hugh Campbell tournament, which is the biggest high school basketball tournament in the country, is held every February at the Kendal Isaacs gym.
