Regulators, Stingers pull off victories in the NPBA

The Patron Regulators and PJ's Stingers both pulled off victories this past weekend as the New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) continued its regular season over at the A.F. Adderley Gymnasium. The Regulators knocked off the Rhythm Rebels, 110-87, and the Stingers edged the Island Luck Pros, 105-96.
Regulators 100, Rebels 87
Devon Johnson led seven players in double figures with 19 points for the Regulators. He shot 6-for-13 from the field and 5-for-10 from behind the three-point line in just over 20 minutes of action. He also pulled down two rebounds and dished out an assist. Lamar Watkins came off the bench to score 15, Gamaliel "Chameleon" Rose added 13, Cordero Thompson scored 12, Cruz Simon finished with 11 and Alex Rolle and Fabian Lightbourne chipped in with 10 apiece.
The Regulators got off to a hot start and ended the first quarter ahead 32-16, and extended that lead to 57-37 by half-time. In the third, the Regulators outscored the Rebels 28-20, and although the Rebels outscored the Regulators 30-25 in the fourth, the deficit was too much to overcome.
Devon Brennen led the Rebels with a game-high 38 points in 40 minutes of play. Richard Gibson had 15 points and two rebounds and John Smith chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
Stingers 105, Pros 96
Able Joseph finished with a double-double of 33 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Stingers. Devon Ferguson added 19 points and six rebounds, Kendrick Curry scored 14 and Daniel Bullard, Jervonne Atkins and Vernon Stubbs chipped in with eight points apiece.
The Stingers held a 23-19 lead at the end of the first quarter, and a held a 50-49 lead at the half. The third was the turning point of the game, as the Stingers erupted for 32 points in the quarter, giving them a 82-71 lead heading into the fourth. Despite being outscored 25-23 by the Pros in the final period, the Stingers managed to hold on for the victory.
Jason Mitchell Jr. had a team-high 17 points on 7-for-13 shooting for the Pros. Ron Marshall and Dion McPhee added 15 points each and Derek Ferguson came off the bench to score 13.
The NPBA is scheduled to be back in action at the A.F. Adderley Gym with another double-header tonight. In the opener at 7:30 p.m., the Rebels and the Regulators will square off once again, and at 9 p.m. the Double R. Services Ltd. Cleaners will be up against the defending champions Commonwealth Bank Giants.
