Police sources claim suspect died from self-inflicted wounds

A man who died within four hours of his arrest for vagrancy harmed himself by repeatedly banging his head against the wall of his cell, police sources claimed.
The man was arrested around 4 p.m. on September 27.
He was found dead with allegedly self-inflicted head injuries around 8 p.m in his cell at the Wulff Road Police Station.
According to sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, other people who were detained around the time of the man's death reportedly confirmed that he was not harmed by anyone else.
It is unknown whether the man had a history of mental problems or if any efforts were made to get him medical care when he first allegedly began hitting his head against the wall in the cell of which he was the sole occupant.
It is also unknown if the man gave a name upon arrest or was fingerprinted.
Yesterday, Central Detective Unit head Paul Rolle said the man's identity was still unknown. According to Rolle, two parents came forward so far but the man is not their son.
At a press conference last week, Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade said the dead man's face will be "cleaned up" and a photograph will be circulated in hopes of determining his identity.
The initial release regarding the man's death was cryptic, with police refusing to name the station where he died.
During the press conference, Greenslade said, "At the time, there were a number of independent witnesses in that cell block, sensible Bahamians, who saw precisely what had happened prior to the alarm being sounded that something was wrong in the cell block.
"I'm satisfied based on all of the information that I received, that the police department has no difficulty in respect to this matter and that there is no police officer that I am particularly concerned about and there is no behavior or action that I'm concerned about."
A coroner's inquest will be held into the circumstances of the man's death.
Police were placed under scrutiny last year after two men died at separate police stations within 24 hours.
A coroner's jury found the death of Aaron Rolle at the Southern Police Station an unlawful killing.
Rolle, 20, died from a ruptured intestine caused by blunt force trauma to his abdomen on February 9, two days after his arrest on charges of escape and armed robbery.
Constables 2126 Akiel Smith and 2468 Carl Smith, who said they had to forcefully restrain Rolle when he attempted to escape from the second floor of the station through a louvered aluminium window, were placed on administrative leave after his death.
The officers have not faced any charges based on the jury's verdict as it is advisory and non-binding on prosecuting authorities.
However, the officers involved in his death have not returned to work.
A differently constituted coroner's jury ruled the February 8 death of Jamie Smith a lawful killing.
Smith, 35, died at the Central Detective Unit within two hours of his arrest on suspicion of armed robbery on February 8, 2013.
Sergeant Ezra Maycock, Corporal Brian Roach, Corporal Sterling Knowles and Sergeant Keno Smith claimed that they had to forcibly restrain Smith after he became violent.
Roach admitted placing Smith in a sleeper hold. Smith died from asphyxia or a lack of oxygen.
