PM denies 'witch hunt' claims

Prime Minister Perry Christie yesterday shot down claims from the Free National Movement (FNM) that the government orchestrated a "political witch hunt" which led to the search and seizure of items from FNM Chairman Darron Cash's home last week.
"No one would have come to me to say that they have a warrant or they are searching anybody's home," Christie said. "That doesn't happen that way."
He was responding to questions from The Nassau Guardian at a nationally-televised press conference at the Cabinet Office.
Last Thursday, three police officers seized two laptops and a smartphone from Cash's home.
The items were reportedly taken in connection to an investigation into leaks of confidential information about Bank of The Bahamas (BOB). Cash's wife works at the bank.
Christie added: "If I saw Darron Cash's wife today, tomorrow, I wouldn't know who she is.
"For me, it's something that doesn't arise. It never concerned me. I was never consulted on it, I don't know about it, it was not within my terms of reference. It's a police matter and it will remain a police matter and the police must be accountable for what they do."
Last week, Cash stressed that neither he nor his wife are behind the alleged leaks.
National Security Minister Dr. Bernard Nottage also addressed the Cash issue yesterday.
He repeated that he had no idea police were going to execute a search warrant at Cash's home.
"For the record, let me say that we are not like them [the FNM] because the only reason they think that we sent the police there is because perhaps that's what they would do," Nottage said.
"I've been in public life for too long for people to place upon me things that never even entered my consciousness. How would I know the police were going to search someone's house?"
FNM Senator Carl Bethel, Cash's lawyer, has said the items were grabbed out of Cash's hands and taken by police. Bethel also said police "refused to deliver or leave a copy of the 'search warrant'" with his client.
Bethel said he will appear before Senior Justice Jon Isaacs today to challenge the constitutionality of the search and seizure.
The FNM raised concerns about BOB after The Punch reported a series of allegations regarding loans from the bank.
Cash has spoken out on the issue several times over the past few months.
