Two Bahamian pilots and a Canadian man were arrested on Monday night in connection with a million-dollar drug bust at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), police reported yesterday.
According to police, officers confiscated 149 pounds of marijuana, 17.4 pounds of ecstasy pills and 2.6 pounds of hashish oil.
Police believe the drugs -- which were in four suitcases -- were smuggled into the country from Canada.
Police said they were acting on intelligence when they conducted a search of a Hawker jet that had just arrived in The Bahamas from Montreal.
The drugs were stashed on the aircraft, police said.
The Bahamians, ages 48 and 37, and the 23-year-old Canadian are expected to face several drug charges this week.
The drug bust is the result of an operation between the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents from the United States.
According to Officer In-Charge of the DEU, Superintendent Samuel Butler, the marijuana has a street value of $670,000, the ecstasy pills have a street value of $360,000 and the hashish oil is estimated to be worth $20,000.
In total, the drugs are worth $1,050,000.
Butler said good police work has resulted in multiple drug busts in the past several weeks.
Earlier this month, officers seized more than $1.2 million worth of suspected marijuana onboard a speedboat in waters near Andros.
The drugs weighed 1,200 pounds.
That seizure came just over a week after DEU and DEA officers discovered nearly $17 million worth of marijuana plants in a field in East Grand Bahama.
On March 6, police made a $50,000 drug bust during a routine patrol on Potter's Cay Dock.
There have been several other large drug busts across the country this year.
Butler said the continued collaboration between the DEU and the DEA has contributed to the recent successes regarding the number of drug interdictions.
