Police have issued a wanted bulletin for Owen George Johnson, 30, of New Providence, who is believed to be the pilot of an aircraft that collided with a police jeep on the tarmac of the Sandy Port Airport in Abaco on Sunday evening.
The aircraft, which was reportedly carrying a group of illegal immigrants, collided with the jeep after the pilot attempted to take off to avoid capture, police said.
As the twin-engine, nine-seater aircraft landed around 6:45 p.m., police attempted to intercept it and instructed the pilot to stop.
However, the pilot made a sharp left turn and crashed into the approaching jeep, according to police.
"We suspect they may have been trying to take off again by making that sharp turn," said Superintendent Noel Curry, officer in charge of the northern Bahamas police division.
As the aircraft came to a halt, the pilot and seven illegal immigrants onboard attempted to escape by running into nearby bushes, police said.
Police arrested four Dominican and three Haitian nationals, including a two or three-year-old child, police said.
The pilot escaped.
The migrants were transported to the Carmichael Road Detention Centre yesterday, police said.
Johnson, who is believed to be the mastermind behind the human smuggling operation, is six feet, six inches tall and of light brown complexion, and heavy build, police said.
He is reportedly a pilot by profession.
Police launched an island-wide manhunt for Johnson on Sunday.
"If seen please do not approach as subject is considered dangerous," said police press officer Inspector Tericita Pinder.
Two officers sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision.
They were treated in hospital and later discharged.
