Bush fires in Grand Bahama impacts Internet services

Cable Bahamas advises that cable-based broadband Internet subscribers in New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera were affected by the burning of a primary fibre optic feed on Grand Bahama island caused by bush fires.

Cable Bahamas' Network Operations Centre (NOC) network alarms sounded shortly before 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Field crews were immediately dispatched to effect repairs, which was identified to be in High Rock, east Grand Bahama.

Cable Bahamas' Internet service was first impacted late Saturday afternoon, however, services to the majority of customers were fully stabilised by 11 p.m. Saturday evening February 8. Internet service to all customers on these islands was fully restored by midday Sunday, February 9.

Cable Bahamas' built-in redundant design enabled the company to sustain service, although total capacity was somewhat reduced during the restoration process. During this time, cable TV and voice services were not affected.

The company advises any subscribers still experiencing Internet performance issues to report them either by phone at 601-8900 in New Providence, 602-8800 in Grand Bahama, and toll free at 1-242-300-2200 on Abaco and Eleuthera, or by e-mail at info@cablebahamas.com for assistance.
