Govt to choose new NIB chairman

The National Insurance Board (NIB) is once again set to get a new chairman.

Rev. James Moultrie, who currently holds the position, was appointed as the chairman of the Public Service Commission in November. He took over for Brian Moree, QC, who held the position for nearly three years.

Minister of Labour and National Insurance Shane Gibson said yesterday the government is considering a few people for the NIB chairman position, but he did not reveal when the appointment would occur or who is being considered. "We should be making an announcement soon," he said.

Moultrie will hold both positions until his replacement is appointed, Gibson said. The minister said the government never intended for Moultrie to remain at NIB for a long period of time.

"We knew that he would only be there for a short period," said Gibson, adding that Moultrie was already being considered to assume the role as chairman of the Public Service Commission when he was appointed NIB chairman.

Moultrie was appointed as NIB chairman after Prime Minister Perry Christie fired the previous chairman, Gregory Moss, in January after he refused to resign.

Christie asked Moss to resign because of the criticisms Moss made against him in a press statement he issued on New Year's Day.

At the time, Moss suggested that the prime minister told an untruth about whether he still had an NIB-issued corporate credit card, and also suggested that Christie and Gibson had failed to properly defend him against allegations made by former NIB Director Algernon Cargill.

Cargill is suing Moss and NIB for defamation, wrongful and unfair dismissal and breach of the Data Protection Act. The case is pending.
