A witness claimed that he saw the three men on trial for the murder of Constable Jimmy Ambrose shoot the officer as they kicked and stomped him while on the ground.

James Campbell was testifying in the retrial of Stephen Stubbs, Andrew "Yogi" Davis and Clinton "Russ" Evans, who are accused of the shooting death of Ambrose and the attempted murder of his partner, Officer Marcian Scott, outside the Club Rock Disco on March 26, 1999.

They have denied the allegations at their trial before Justice Roy Jones. Campbell claimed he witnessed the incident unfold around 1 a.m. as he stood outside the club.

Campbell said that he arrived at the club around 10 p.m., but never went inside. Instead, he remained outside the club's door and spoke to friends.

Campbell said that he did not flee as security officers did when four men exited the nightclub firing guns. In court, Campbell identified the defendants as the men he saw shooting the officer.

During questioning by Romona Farquharson, who appears for Evans, Campbell admitted that he was remanded to prison on a rape charge.

However, he denied that the decision of the attorney general to drop his case a week after he testified against the men in a previous trial was related to his testimony.

Campbell also denied that he apologized to Evans in the prison's exercise yard and said that police had pressured him into implicating them.

Ducille, who appears for Stubbs, reminded Campbell that during the preliminary inquiry into the charges that although he claimed he had known Stubbs for eight years, he identified Evans for Stubbs.

Ducille also suggested that Campbell had problems with his sight because he was still recovering from cataract surgery at the time of the incident. Campbell claimed that he had completely recovered from his surgery.

Cargill, who appears for Davis, questioned the likelihood that everyone fled after hearing the gunshots, except Campbell. Cargill suggested that he identified Davis because he witnessed his arrest at the crime scene.

Campbell said that he provided the information that led to Davis' arrest. Director of Public Prosecutions Vinette Graham-Allen is the prosecutor.
