Excelling takes dedication, commitment and drive. Travis Ferguson, Perry Adderley and Danielle Gibson are three CARIFTA athletes who exemplify these qualities. Children of our very own employees and proud parents, Robertha Ferguson, Mildred Adderley and Tami Gibson, the three star athletes practiced, practiced some more, and earned themselves a place on The Bahamas' CARIFTA team at the recent CARIFTA Games, held here in The Bahamas.
Accompanied by their parents, the athletes were warmly welcomed, congratulated, and presented with gifts and inspiring words of wisdom and encouragement from CIBC FirstCaribbean's leaders, including Managing Director Marie Rodland-Allen, Managing Director of Customer Relationship Management and Strategy Trevor Torzsas, Head of Human Resources Siobhan Lloyd and Senior Project Manager Basil Longley.
"You have made yourselves, your parents and The Bahamas proud. We welcome you today and present you with these gifts because of your success in your chosen field of sports. If the dedication and commitment you are developing carries over to other aspects of your life, then the sky would be the limit as to what you can accomplish."
Torzsas expressed similar sentiments saying: "The discipline you have learnt serves you well and influences how you manage the rest of your life. This is one of the reasons why the bank supports sports because these traits become woven into the fabric of who you are. Also, by developing our youth through sports, we help develop stronger communities and demonstrate our commitment to nation-building."
Perry Adderley's mother, Mildred Adderly, remarked: "I am truly overwhelmed and appreciative of the support the bank has shown to these athletes because it encourages them to keep excelling. Their making the Bahamian team was inspirational because I know how many people they beat out. It is truly a proud moment for all of us as parents and we certainly thank the bank for its efforts."
A 12th grader, preparing for the all important BGCSE exams at St. Augustine College (SAC), and graduation in June 2013, Danielle Gibson was unable to join the celebration because she was at the Penn Relays in the United States where she participated in both the 4x100 meters (m) and the 4x400m relays for her school. At the CARIFTA Games, she participated in the long jump and the triple jump. Studying to become a biomedical engineer, Danielle is described by her mother Tami as, "an exceptional student who is able to balance education and sports, excelling at both."
Ferguson and Adderley, also students of SAC, are both in Grade 10. Ferguson won a medal for placing second in the under-17 boys javelin. Adderley participated in the discus throw.
