Church Leader Dies During Fun Run/Walk

Investigators yesterday appealed to the driver of a Ford pick-up truck responsible for the hit-and-run death of a pastor to turn themselves in. Dr Kendal Stubbs, senior pastor of the Remnant Tabernacle of Praise Church, was killed by a driver while he was participating in a fun run/walk on Saturday. After the tragedy, one of his daughters, when she saw his body, said ‘But daddy, what about Christmas?’ A police source who also participated in the walk said the impact of the car had thrown Dr Stubbs’s body into a nearby utility pole. Dr Stubbs, a husband and father of three girls aged 18, 16, and 12, was declared dead at the scene, sources said.

Officials in the Road Traffic Division said a description of the vehicle fitted that of a tan or cream coloured quad cab truck. Dr Stubbs was struck while the walk was taking place east on Carmichael Road, police said, shortly after 7am on Saturday. The mood was sombre as church members gathered at the Remnant Tabernacle yesterday morning, with members weeping openly while others could not be consoled. One churchgoer who spoke to The Tribune anonymously as she was not given authorisation to speak on behalf of the entire church and its officials said no one could have imagined something like this happening.

She said: “A lot of us are still in shock. He was such a good man, pastor and husband. There is no telling how or when we might recover or move on from this. All we can do is seek God’s face and pray for his comfort at this time.” Calls were made to the church but were not answered. Road Traffic Superintendent Kent Strachan said police were now asking for anyone who might know the whereabouts of the driver to come forward. He said: “One of the victim’s daughters when she saw him said ‘But daddy, what about Christmas?’ Until you are a parent, you would never understand how serious this is for a child, not to mention a family. “We are working diligently to bring closure to this incident and we want members of the public who might have seen something or seen the driver’s face clearly to step up and let us know.”
