A terrified sales clerk fled from the Rolex Boutique during a smash-and-grab robbery, a Supreme Court jury heard yesterday.
Prosecutors allege that David Collins, Jonathan Armbrister and Jethro Curry stole 12 watches from the boutique, located in John Bull's flagship store on Bay Street on May 22, 2011.
The Crown alleges that a man smashed a display case with a hammer before taking the watches.
Denise Johnson, a sales associate in the Rolex Boutique, said she was showing a customer a ladies' watch when she heard a "smash sound".
She said, "I dropped whatever I had in my hand and ran out the store."
Johnson said she ran to the David Yurman store, which is also owned by John Bull.
During cross-examination, Geoffrey Farquharson who represents Collins, pointed out that Johnson's account in court differed from the story she related to police immediately following the hold-up.
In the statement, Johnson said she fled before the smashing sound.
Farquharson suggested that Johnson had prior knowledge about the robbery if she fled before the display case was broken.
In response to a question from Jerone Roberts, who appears for Armbrister, Johnson said she could not say what happened to the watch she left behind.
Roberts asked, "Can you say today that the customer did not take that watch?"
With a chuckle, Johnson said, "I don't know what happened to that watch."
