For the second consecutive week, games in the New Providence Softball Association (NPSA) had to be postponed due to inclement weather.
The league was forced to play the two opening games, scheduled for last week Saturday, on Monday past. That announcement, made by league president Godfrey Burnside, came an hour after the official ceremony. This weekend the call to reschedule the games to today was made long before teams and fans flocked to the park.
Taking to the field first today will be the Lady Hitmen, squaring off against the ASAP Assassins. The men's affair will follow immediately afterwards. That exciting feature will showcase the Dorin United Hitmen going up against the Blue Chip Buccaneers.
"It is unfortunate that we had to postpone the games, but we can't do anything with Mother Nature," said Burnside. "I am not worried about having a back-up of games. The schedule has open dates so when the opening was rained out last Saturday, we played the two games on Monday night. If this weather persists and we continue to have postponements then we will make-up those games on our free days, like Mondays or Wednesdays. The two games that were scheduled for today (Saturday), we will play those games on Monday. The ladies game will start at 7 p.m., and the men's at 8:30 p.m."
The league played on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of last week. The regular scheduled games are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
There are seven female squads competing for the top honors this year and six male teams. A total of 21 games each, three rounds of games, will be played on the female's side, before the start of the playoffs. The men will have 24 games each, four rounds, of regular season play. Burnside believes that most of the teams are pretty much even, in terms of their play, and that upsets can happen on any given night.
Playing in the women's division are the Proper Care Pool Sharks, the Lady Hitmen, the Y2 Shipping Wildcats, the Sigma Brackettes, the ASAP Assassins, the Black Scorpions and the Bommer G. Operators. The six teams that will compete for the men's title include the Blue Chip Buccaneers, the Y2 Shipping Bulldogs, the Bommer G. Truckers, the Miller Rams, the Dorin United Hitmen and the Caribbean Civil Group Mighty Mitts.
