Lunch & the Law to tackle topical issues

Mon, Jan 26th 2009, 12:00 AM

The third annual Lunch & the Law presentation organized by the Law Library of the Libraries & Instructional Media Services Department of The College of The Bahamas will take place on Friday 30th, January, 2009, at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, beginning at 9.15 a.m.

These special days of panel presentations on topical subjects within the legislation of The Bahamas and luncheon with a keynote speaker have quickly become an established feature of the calendar in the legal world and this year’s promises to surpass even the outstanding events that have preceded it. In the morning there will be two panels.

The first on the emotive and sensitive topic of Inheritance, Succession and Generation Property will feature three household names: Mr. Wayne Munroe, President, The Bahamas Bar Association; Mrs. G. Diane Stewart, Partner, McKinney Bancroft & Hughes; and Ms. Judith A. Whitehead, Managing Partner, Graham Thompson & Co. This seminar will be moderated by Michael Stevenson, Associate Professor & Head of Dept., UWI/COB LL.B. Programme.

The second will be on Domestic Violence in The Bahamas and will be moderated by Koschina Marshall, Acting Assistant Registrar in the Supreme Court and a former Family Law Lecturer at UWI/COB LL.B. Programme. This topic will also feature presentations from some distinguished ahamians, including Hon. Loretta Butler Turner, Minister of State for Social Services; Dr. David F. Allen, Psychiatrist; Superintendent Elaine Sands, Royal Bahamas Police Force; Mrs. Jo-Anne Been, Assistant Counsel, Law Reform Revision Commission; Justice Rubie Nottage, retired, Family Law Lecturer, UWI/COB LL.B. Programme; and Dr. Sandra Dean-Patterson, Director The Bahamas Crisis Centre.

The keynote speaker at the luncheon will be Attorney General, Michael Barnett who follows Justice Jon Isaacs, who spoke at the luncheon last year, and Allyson Maynard-Gibson who was the keynote speaker at the inaugural luncheon in 2007. It all promises to be a truly memorable day and the organizers hope lawyers, students of the law and interested members of the general public will come out and hear what these experts have to say.

The cost to the general public is $75.00, for College of The Bahamas faculty $50.00 and for students on presentation of ID it is $40.00.
