The Hon. Frank Howard Watson Biography

The Hon. Frank Howard Watson served in various ministries, including tourism, during the first two terms of the Free National Movement administration between 1992 and 2002. He ended his stint in government as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, with responsibilities for Public Utilities and the Public Service.

Mr. Watson was born at Gordon’s, Long Island on March 24, 1940. Upon graduation from the Government High School, he joined the Customs Department as Trainee Customs Officer. In 1962 he completed a Customs and Excise course in London, England and a course for Senior Customs Officials in Helsinki, Finland in 1975. He completed a programme leading to a Diploma in Public Administration at the University of the West Indies in 1967 and was promoted to Deputy Comptroller of Customs in 1969, serving in that capacity until 1977.

Mr. Watson first offered himself as a candidate for the Free National Movement in the Carmichael Constituency in 1977. He won the constituency in 1982, and was reelected in 1987.

In the 1992 general elections he was elected to the House of Assembly as the Member of Parliament for Adelaide.

A founding member and past president of the Long Islanders Association, he is past commodore of The Bahamas sailing Association and past director of Kiwanis Over-the -Hill in Nassau. His recreational activities include fishing and tennis.

Mr. Watson is an Anglican by religion and has two daughters, Sheila Gibson and Colene.
