Police have charged a 20-year-old man with the murder of Francisco Hanna, who was gunned down days after his release from prison.
Dennis Mather, of Lincoln Boulevard, surrendered to police to "clear his name", his lawyer Stanley Rolle told Acting Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell.
Despite this, Rolle alleged that investigators assaulted Mather and caused injuries to his wrists, head and buttock while interrogating him about the July 10 shooting of Hanna at Wilson Track.
Mather did not have to enter a plea to the allegation during his arraignment.
Prosecutors plan to speed up the trial process by committing the case to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment on September 27.
Bethell remanded Mather to prison and told him he could make a bail application in the Supreme Court.
Hanna, 25, of Key West Street, was in prison on a causing harm charge.  He was released when his alleged victim, Attila Leon, said he was not interested in pursuing the case.
