A judge yesterday directed an acquittal in the trial of a woman accused of stealing more than $7,000 from the National Insurance Board (NIB).

Prosecutors alleged that Rose Annemarie Forbes, 53, of Foster Street, pocketed $7,124 in NIB contributions she collected from four Haitians from July 2007 to May 2008.

According to the evidence, Forbes gave the complainants letters certifying that their contributions were current, but they later discovered that NIB had not received the payments.

Forbes was tried for stealing by reason of employment.

However, the Crown closed its case against the NIB assistant manager without any evidence from Forbes' bosses to say the money was stolen.

Senior Justice Jon Isaacs agreed with defense lawyer Milton Evans' argument that the prosecution had failed to make out a case against Forbes because of this submission.
Basil Cumberbatch was the prosecutor.
